Gladys Frances Thompson

Gladys Frances Thompson, 98, passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 13th, 2026, in Rocklin, CA. Gladys was born on May 16th, 1927, to Francis Xavier O’Rourke Reed and Mary Gladys Kennedy. She was a cherished mother of 5, grandmother of 10, great-grandmother of 16, great-great-grandmother of 2, and her presence will be deeply missed. Born and raised in San Francisco, CA, Gladys served as an usher at the first United Nations Conference after WWII. Gladys was highly involved in Girl Scouts as a member and a leader, and she took her troops backpacking in Yosemite. Gladys spent her working years with the Sunnyvale School District. But those who knew her most remember her as a caring and welcoming member of her community. She hosted every holiday gathering at her home and continued to volunteer during her retirement by helping in her grandchildren's classes well into her 90s. Gladys spent the majority of her adult years in Sunnyvale, CA, with her beloved husband of 72 years, Garrie Emory Thompson. An avid world traveler with an appreciation for other cultures, Gladys and Garrie traveled to many countries during their retirement. They also traveled in a motorhome to many U.S. states, taking their grandchildren with them on many adventures. Gladys enjoyed reading, knitting, crafts, tap dancing, and watching cowboy movies every Saturday. Gladys is survived by her daughter and son, Carol (Al) and David (Donya); daughters-in-law, Diane and Penny; 10 grandchildren, Garrie, Michael, Amanda, Maris, James, Ryan, Rachelle, Cassandra, Chad, and Chelsea; 16 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Garrie, and 3 sons, Ricky, Wayne, and Bruce. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Reed, and her brother, Mark Reed, who she was close with before their passing. The viewing will be held at the Murray Family Funeral Chapel in Rocklin, CA, on Tuesday, May 26th, 2026, from 4-7 PM with a time of sharing at 6 PM. A mass will be held in her honor at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Roseville, CA, on Wednesday, May 27th at 11 AM. She will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma, CA, on Thursday, May 28th at 12 PM.
